“I Haven’t Been to the Dentist in Years…” (A Real Patient Conversation)

It’s something we hear more often than you might think.

During an examination, he said it almost apologetically:

“I haven’t been to a dentist in years… I know things probably aren’t great.”

He had finally decided to come in after putting it off for a long time.

Like many people, it wasn’t because he didn’t care – it was because life got busy, a bit of anxiety crept in, and the longer it was left, the harder it felt to come back.

Taking the First Step

At that first visit, there were a number of issues to address.

Nothing unusual for someone who hadn’t been seen for a while—but understandably overwhelming from a patient’s perspective.

So instead of trying to do everything at once, we made a simple plan:

One step at a time

A Different Approach: One Filling at a Time

Rather than rushing treatment, we spaced things out.

We carried out one filling per month, allowing time to:

  • Keep each visit manageable
  • Build confidence gradually
  • Reduce discomfort and anxiety

It meant progress felt steady – not overwhelming.

And with each visit, things got easier.

More Than Just Fixing Teeth

Treatment was only part of the journey.

We also focused on preventing future problems, so he wouldn’t end up back in the same situation.

This included:

  • Personalised oral hygiene advice
  • Simple, realistic changes to daily habits
  • Diet guidance to reduce risk
  • Regular hygiene visits
  • High-fluoride toothpaste for added protection

The goal wasn’t just to treat – it was to change the long-term outcome

The Turning Point

Over time, something shifted.

Appointments became routine.

Confidence grew.

The anxiety started to fade.

By the end of treatment, his mouth was stable and healthy.

What Happened Next

Since then, he’s been back for regular examinations.

No pain.

No emergencies.

No surprises.

Just maintenance and reassurance.

“It’s a world of difference,” he said.

Why This Matters

Many patients from nearby areas such as Gobowen come in feeling exactly the same way:

  • It’s been years
  • They’re worried about what they’ll be told
  • They expect it to be difficult

But the reality is often very different.

With the right approach, things can be improved steadily – and comfortably.

If It’s Been a While…

You’re not alone.

And you won’t be judged.

The most important step is simply starting.

From there, everything else can be taken at your pace.

A calm, supportive approach can make all the difference – not just to your teeth, but to how you feel about dental care going forward.
