Bleeding that won't stop

Please note: blood-stained saliva is normal after dental extractions. For self-help:

  • Make a small pad from a clean, damp handkerchief or kitchen towel.
  • Rinse your mouth once with warm (not hot) water to clear blood.
  • Place the pad over the socket and bite firmly for 20 minutes while sitting upright.
  • Repeat once if needed.
  • Avoid alcohol – Do not disturb the clot.

If bleeding does not stop, seek immediate dental or medical help.

Swelling restricting my breathing

If your swelling is restricting your breathing, swallowing, or is extending to the eyes:

  • Seek emergency medical care immediately (NHS 111 / A&E).

Knocked-out permanent (adult) tooth

It may be possible to replant the tooth if this can be carried out soon after, ideally within 30 minutes.

  • Handle by the crown, avoiding touching the root.
  • Keep the tooth moist — ideally in fresh or long-life milk.
  • Seek immediate dental care.

Urgent Dental Problem

Contact us as soon as possible if you have:

  • Unmanageable dental pain
  • Severe swelling
  • A knocked-out baby tooth
  • A broken tooth with dentine exposed
  • Need for follow-up after an emergency

Problems That Are Not Urgent, But Still Important

We understand that some issues aren’t emergencies but still need attention.

  • Manageable pain from a broken tooth, lost filling, or minor infection
  • Concerns about a lump, ulcer, or lesion
  • Broken dentures or visible damage to a restoration
