Dental X-rays: Why They Are Safe and Important

Many patients are surprised when their dentist recommends dental X-rays. Because they cannot see any problems themselves, they often wonder if they are really necessary.

In reality, dental X-rays are one of the most important diagnostic tools in modern dentistry.

At Oswyn House Dental Practice we use X-rays only when clinically necessary to ensure accurate diagnosis and safe treatment.

What Dental X-Rays Show

Dental X-rays allow dentists to see areas that cannot be examined visually, including:

• Decay between teeth

• Infection around tooth roots

• Bone loss caused by gum disease

• Impacted teeth

• Problems developing beneath existing fillings or crowns

Without X-rays, many problems would only be discovered once pain or damage had already occurred.

Are Dental X-Rays Safe?

Modern dental X-ray technology uses very low levels of radiation.

In fact, the radiation exposure from a dental X-ray is extremely small and comparable to everyday environmental exposure.

Dentists in the UK follow strict regulations to ensure X-rays are only taken when necessary and always at the lowest safe dose.

This means the benefits of detecting problems early far outweigh the minimal risk.
