Expert Braces Oral Hygiene Advice – Oswestry, Shropshire
Wearing fixed braces is one of the most effective ways to straighten teeth — but cleaning teeth with braces properly requires extra care.
Brackets and wires trap plaque (bacteria and food debris), increasing the risk of:
• Swollen or bleeding gums.
• Tooth decay.
• White-spot lesions (permanent marks on teeth).
• Bad breath.
At Oswyn House Dental Practice in Oswestry, we regularly support children and teenagers who are struggling with braces oral hygiene — often because their technique isn’t quite right.
Here’s our evidence-based guide on how to clean braces properly in line with UK recommendations.
UK guidance (Delivering Better Oral Health) recommends:
• Brushing twice daily.
• Using a fluoride toothpaste containing 1,350–1,500 ppm fluoride.
• Brushing for at least two minutes.
Use a small-headed soft toothbrush (manual or electric). Evidence shows both are effective — technique matters more than brush type.
When brushing with braces:
• Hold the brush at a 45° angle to the gumline.
• Clean above and below each bracket.
• Use small circular movements.
• Pay particular attention to the gumline.
If gums are bleeding, this is often a sign that plaque is not being removed effectively.
2. Use Interdental Brushes Between Teeth
A toothbrush alone cannot clean between teeth — especially with fixed braces.
For effective braces cleaning, we recommend using interdental brushes once daily. These small brushes:
• Slide gently between teeth.
• Clean areas regular brushing misses.
• Are easier to use than floss with braces.
Interdental brushes are strongly supported in UK dental guidance and are one of the most reliable ways to reduce gum inflammation during orthodontic treatment.
3. Use a Single-Tufted Brush Around Brackets
One of the most common areas for plaque build-up is around brackets and under the wire.
At Oswyn House Dental Practice, we frequently recommend adding a single-tufted (end-tuft) toothbrush for targeted cleaning.
These allow precise cleaning:
• Around individual brackets.
• Under the orthodontic wire.
• Along the gumline.
Emerging research suggests that adding a single-tufted brush improves plaque removal when used alongside regular brushing. In clinical practice, many children find them easier and more manageable than floss threaders.
When it comes to cleaning braces effectively, the best tool is the one that is used consistently and correctly.
4. Use a Daily Fluoride Mouth Rinse
Braces increase the risk of enamel damage and white-spot lesions.
We recommend a daily 0.05% sodium fluoride mouth rinse, used at a different time from brushing (for example, after school).
This helps strengthen enamel and protect teeth during orthodontic treatment.
Simple Daily Routine for Cleaning Braces
For healthy teeth and gums during braces treatment:
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste.
Use interdental brushes daily between teeth.
Use a single-tufted brush around brackets and wires.
Use a fluoride mouth rinse daily.
Why Proper Braces Cleaning Matters
During orthodontic treatment, we sometimes see significant plaque deposits, calculus build-up and inflamed gums — not because children aren’t trying, but because the method isn’t effective enough.
Improving technique and simplifying the routine can dramatically improve gum health within weeks.
We are always happy to:
• Demonstrate correct brushing technique.
• Assess gum health during braces.
• Liaise with your orthodontist to ensure consistent advice.
