Your frequently asked questions

If you’ve ever wondered whether seeing the dentist every six months is really necessary, you’re not alone. The short answer? For many people, yes—and here’s why that recommendation is supported by robust clinical research and national health guidance.

An oral health assessment is a comprehensive check of your teeth, gums, and mouth to assess your overall dental health and spot any potential problems early.

A routine check-up focuses mainly on your teeth and gums. An oral health assessment is more detailed - it also looks at your bite, soft tissues, oral cancer screening, and risk factors such as diet, lifestyle, and oral hygiene habits.

Your dentist will examine your teeth, gums, and mouth, take any necessary X-rays, review your medical history, and discuss your oral health habits. We’ll also create a tailored prevention or treatment plan if needed.

Typically 20–30 minutes, but this can vary depending on whether X-rays or further investigations are needed.

No special preparation is needed, but it helps if you bring details of your medical history, medications, and any concerns about your oral health.

Most people benefit from one every 6–12 months. Some patients with higher risk factors (such as gum disease, frequent decay, or smoking) may need more frequent assessments.

X-rays are only taken if clinically necessary. They allow us to check between teeth, under fillings, and inside the bone to spot problems not visible to the eye.

No, the assessment is completely painless. If any treatment is recommended afterwards, your dentist will explain your options and ensure you are comfortable.

We’ll explain our findings in clear terms, show you any images or X-rays, and discuss treatment options with you. Nothing is carried out without your consent.

This depends on your care arrangement. We’ll explain any costs or NHS/private cover before the assessment.
